Need Reader Help

Okay, I need your help.

We’re finishing the planning stages of the upstairs bedrooms and new blinds are part of that plan. My question is:

Should I paint the trim around the windows?

Pros:

It would give the rooms a fresh, clean look.

It would go better with the white 2” vinyl blinds that I like.

It would go better with the more contemporary style I’m going for in the remodel.

Cons:

Wood is easier to keep it looking clean.

Painting trim is more work than not painting trim.

This wood trim is ALL OVER THE HOUSE. If I paint these two rooms, where would it stop?

Would painted trim look okay with wood doors? Would I end up painting the doors?

I hope you can see my dilemma. Please help! I go in circles when I think about this and I’m getting dizzy!

If they stay stained, I could also use wood or bamboo blinds... (but more expensive and not as contemporary.

Ok, here are my thoughts...

I think you could paint the trim around the windows without being committed to paint all of the trim in the house.

But...

My vote would be to paint all of the trim, maybe even paint the trim around the windows a fun color.

I do think you would need to paint doors if you paint the trim... but you need to think process. It isn't something that you would need to do all in one weekend. You could wait and do the doors one at a time over time.

That is my opinion at least. So much fun redecorating! Remember to have fun with it!

I agree with Krista, I would paint the trim. Wood trim drives me crazy except in Craftsman style homes.

My parents painted theirs when they redid the kitchen/dining living area, but they left their doors brown for now. It doesn't look bad, although I would eventually paint the doors. It's not something you have to do right away/all at the same time.

If you are going with a contemporary style, I would paint the wood - just do it room by room as you go through the house.

I like your vision of white window trim, but I think you can do that without having to paint the door trim. But if you DO paint the door trim, I think you'd have to paint the doors, right? So I vote for the 25-30% approach and say paint the window trim only; if the door trim bothers you you can paint it later.

I have weird wooden trim ALL OVER my J house and can't do anything about it, so I am jealous of your ability to fix the design elements that ail you!

Okay, I think I'm in the minority, but I say if you're not painting the trim around the doors, then leave the window trim unpainted. It matches. I thin white blinds would look great with the wood trim and if the wood trim is throughout, then it gives it a nice feeling of continuity throughout the house.

That said, I love, love white trim. But, I wouldn't paint just the windows and not the door trim and doors. And, doing all of that would be a big undertaking.

Just my $0.02. I"m sure it'll look great whatever you go with! :-)
