My Mind: Uh... what? Did he just call me ma'am?? Surely he was talking to someone else... no... he was definitely talking to me.... ma'am? Do I look like a ma'am? He's in college! Surely I don't look that much older than him! Why would he call me ma'am?? What just happened?? No!!!!!! I'm too young to be called ma'am by college students!! I just turned 30! *gasp* No! Does something happen when one turns 30? Is there an invisible line? What is going ON????
Music starts up and we turn around to pay attention to the service as our conversation winds down.
Me: Did that guy just call me "ma'am?"
Rob: Yea, I was wondering if you heard that. Don't worry about it. Remember the first time you met our old college pastor's wife? She didn't look old, but you knew she was older than you? I think I called her ma'am when I first met her.
My Mind: Hmm, okay. She was certainly not anything close to old-looking then and still isn't. And if overly polite male college students feel compelled to call me ma'am, I guess I shouldn't fret about it. Ugh. Vanity.

Its because you're married. And he was apparently polite. I'd rather get ma'am'ed than "sugar"-ed, which I get a lot at work.
Funny. I get so offended too, but Amanda is right- it's because you are married and he is polite. But I hear you.
The other day, I got sooooo freakin' excited b/c I got carded for buying wine. Just in case there are a lot of 19 year old, mother of four children buying Shiraz out there.
I work with Jr. Highers and I get ma'amed ALL. THE. TIME! And they all think I am old. And I have also recently come to the realization that while I do not feel (or look) old..I am definitely NOT 19 anymore, and definitely NOT in college anymore (my 19 year old co-leader is and it is painfully obvious that I am 10 years older than her!). However, I am ok with that - the important thing is that I don't feel, act or look "old."
And Tyne - I got carded recently
as well at the grocery store, and it also made me a little happy...that is, until the checkout girl looked at my id and then said "Oh, I'm sorry" b/c she also realized how NOT 19 I am...it was like she was saying "Oh, wow, you are WAY over 21, how could I ever think you should be carded?"
